''So haunting are his works that we are summoned to them much the way one is drawn to the warmth and glow of an evening campfire. They are, however, more than physical experiences. They possess an intellectual richness and completeness reflective of a life's journey of discovery in pursuit of the self.''
J. Brooks Joyner

Steve was recently interviewed about his childhood in Plymouth, UK and his thoughts on the city's current creative energy.
During his RAF service, Steve was stationed on the island of Gan on Addu Atoll in the Maldives for almost 18 months, flying regular sorties between the Maldives and Singapore. The southernmost island of the the southernmost Atoll, located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, Steve was greatly inspired by this tropical setting so far from his native Cornwall.
Reading Emil Zola's 'L'Oeuve' (The Masterpiece) in the library of the airbase piqued his interest and contributed towards Steve's decision to become an artist.
In the Winter of 2023 Steve was able to return to the island with direct flights now available from Sri Lanka.
Here he met Marion, the wife of one of the Sergeants, who visits Gan every year. Although many of the original buildings now stand empty, overgrown by tropical plants, she showed Steve the old Astra Cinema, which is now a little museum dedicated to 'The Lonely Men of Coral Command' and filled with photographs and memorabilia from the time when the island was a working RAF base. There were even some photographs of Steve!

'The Lonely Men of Coral Command' gives an idea of what life was like on this refuelling base in the early 1970s, shortly before Steve's arrival.
